For a single night, book a daily-rate car park close to the terminal. Short stay is priced by the hour and gets expensive overnight; off-airport saves almost nothing across one day.
An overnight is where the usual advice inverts most sharply, and where people most often pay too much by following guidance written for holidays.
Why is short stay wrong here?
Because hourly pricing across roughly twenty-four hours climbs fast. Short stay exists for people collecting passengers or making a brief visit.
It is the closest car park, so it is the one you find first — and that is exactly the trap. A daily rate with a two-minute walk added is almost always better.
Why is off-airport wrong too?
The saving has one day to accumulate; the transfer is paid twice regardless.
Twenty-five minutes at each end to save a single day's difference is a poor trade. On a fortnight the same maths works beautifully. On one night it does not.
Off-airport parking is a volume discount. A one-night trip has no volume.
So what should I book?
A daily-rate car park within walking distance — the default answer
Official long stay if the walkable options are dear for your dates
Meet and greet only if the flight is very early or you are travelling with children
Never short stay, unless you are back within a few hours
Would being dropped off be cheaper?
For a single night, often yes — and it is worth considering properly. Most UK airports charge at the terminal forecourt but have a free drop-off area further out with a shuttle link.
Over a fortnight this asks a great deal of whoever is driving, twice. Over one night it is a small favour, and it removes the parking cost entirely.
What about the train?
Competitive for one person on an overnight, less so for two or more. A single return fare is hard to beat when you are only buying one of them.
Rail access varies enormously by airport, so price it for your actual station rather than assuming. Birmingham and Manchester have strong direct links; Bristol has no station at all.
Does it change for business trips?
Yes — schedule beats price when a meeting might overrun. A flexible rate and a short transfer are worth the small premium.
Check the VAT receipt position too, if it is going on expenses. Some operators issue one only on request.
